Elk Research Institute

Welcome to the Elk Research Institute

The Elk Research Institute is a nonprofit organization formed by dedicated men and women seeking a viable solution to Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) to preserve our wild heritage for future generations. The institute was formed in 2003 to expand research that began in 1997and is based in the heart of deer and elk country near beautiful Durango, Colorado.

We have developed animal and facility resources where meaningful research can be undertaken and we make these resources available to others. ERI is a leading organization in developing and evaluating a rare strain of elk that is showing resistance to CWD. Our programs will help wild and captive herds alike, preserving these magnificent animals for future generations.

It's Calving Season!

Our first baby of the season was born on May 14. This healthy heifer weighed 34 pounds, right at the average birth weight for elk.

We expect to have over fifty calves this year as we continue to promote animals possessing the gene shown to have resistance to CWD.
