ERI Helps in Study Using Advance Remote Sensing Technologies

A high resolution airborne imaging mission was flown in Durango, Colorado, on August 7, 2009, to characterize elk herds with the goal of measuring and managing caribou herds in the Canadian Territory of Nunavut using advanced remote sensing technologies.

The mission was flown over herds managed by the Elk Research Institute using state of the art hyperspectral cameras. These cameras operated by Spectir LLC of Reno, NV, and The Aerospace Corporation of El Segundo, CA, measure over 450 spectral channels from visible to thermal infrared light for each 1/2 meter square pixel in the survey.

Ultimately the spectral "fingerprint" of the elk in the ERI preserves will be characterized and used as a baseline for possible larger surveys of caribou in Nunavut.
